Roberts is amazing in Cry 4 as Jill, Sidney’s parent, and actress also starred in an underrated horror movie that should be talked about a lot more than it is. The Blackcoat’s Daughter was released in 2015 and Osgood Perkins, who wrote and directed, I’m the pretty thing that lives in the house, is also the writer/director here. Right away, the movie feels more special than many others because it tells three chilling stories. Kat (Kiernan Shipka) and Rose (Lucy Bonyton) are boarders preparing for winter vacation. Kat is waiting for her mom and dad to pick her up and Rose is worried because she thinks she’s pregnant.

The film also tells the story of Joan (Emma Roberts), who has left a mental hospital and accepts the kindness of strangers Bill (James Remar) and Linda (Lauren Holly) as they drive her around. If these stories were kept separate, the movie would still be incredibly interesting. But it’s the way the stories connect that makes The Blackcoat’s Daughter an underrated horror film that absolutely anyone who loves the genre must see.

The Blackcoat’s Daughter stands out for two main reasons: its literary atmosphere and its major twist. The film is as poetic and beautiful as a novel, as the audience follows the different stories of Kat, Joan and Rose. The movie could follow a straight timeline and use flashbacks, which would be just as well, but the decision to focus on these three characters in this way is a smart one.

Like a unique horror film about a ghost, The Blackcoat’s Daughter is a new version of a character taken over by a demon. It happens a lot in the horror genre, but unlike Jennifer’s body When Jennifer (Megan Fox) begins to seduce and kill boys, Kat seems to target anyone nearby because she can’t control her sudden desire for harm. Because the boarding school is Catholic and the nuns are teachers, the characters deal with issues of right, wrong and morality 24/7, and the idea of a girl turning into a demon takes makes sense in this context.

The Blackcoat’s Daughter joins a horror movie legacy with twists and turns when it turns out Joan and Kat are the same person. The movie tells the audience that Kat murdered nuns and Rose while she was in school because she was possessed by a demon. It also turns out that Bill and Linda are Rose’s parents and have been mourning her tragic death since it happened nine years ago. It’s a really fun reveal to watch because it’s impossible to guess. It seems that Joan and Kat are just lonely young women who have nothing to do with each other, but of course that ends up not being true.

While sometimes fans can rewatch a movie and see that there were subtle little clues that help explain the twist, the same can’t be said here. The film makes Kat and Joan feel like totally separate people and should be loved for that reason alone, as sometimes big reveals can fall flat in the horror and thriller genres. By the time Joan/Kat kills Rose’s parents, audiences know this isn’t a movie that does what’s familiar and expected.

Mostly, The Blackcoat’s Daughter has an impressive setting: a boarding school in the middle of winter. The setting of a horror movie can make all the difference and if the movie was set in a normal high school or in the summer, it certainly wouldn’t have the same lasting impression. The movie looks terrifying and cold, and while it’s a big shock that Kat and Joan are the same person and evil, it seems inevitable that something bad will happen at this boarding school. It feels like a place where everyone is alone and trying to find some kind of connection while wanting to spend as little time there as possible.

If horror movie fans want characters to keep them guessing, plot twists that should be celebrated, and a spooky atmosphere, then The Blackcoat’s Daughter is the perfect film to discover.
