Pune theater actor Gillian Pinto makes his film debut



Pune’s Gillian Pinto, a stage actress, made her film debut as the lead actress in Nirmal Anand Ki Puppy which will be released in the city on October 30. After more than a decade of theatrical experience with renowned directors like Lillette Dubey, Hina Siddiqui, Faezeh Jalali, Sunil Shanbag and others, Pinto will be seen on the big screen in this film which has already been released in Chandigarh, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Delhi, Gurgaon and Mumbai.

The 1.5-hour film is written and directed by independent filmmaker Sandeep Mohan. The story revolves around the life of Nirmal Anand (Karanveer Khullar), an anti-diabetic drug salesman, and his wife Sarah (Gillian Pinto). The film is woven around the dynamics of the couple and two events – Nirmal diagnosed with diabetes and the disappearance of his dog (Parie) causing them to react in unexpected ways. It shows their grief, love, mutual respect and how modern relationships require an equal amount of compromise and understanding from both partners.

The film was appreciated in several international film festivals like Jagran Film Festival -Mumbai, Cinequest – USA, IndoGerman Filmweek – Berlin and won the award for best screenplay at the DCSouth Asian Film Festival (DCSAFF) – Washington DC.

“I was delighted to have the opportunity to play a leading role in this film by one of the best independent filmmakers. The character of Sarah is layered and nuanced and it was very exciting to put herself in her shoes, to live her life as the movie progressed. Although she is Nirmal’s wife, Sarah is also a career-focused woman, mother of two small children and a puppy. It’s a story of love, loss, grief, joy, relationships and family life in general, ”Pinto told The Indian Express.

Pinto, who prepared for the role of pregnant woman and mother, spoke to several women and tried to understand their lives, their goals, their challenges and their aspirations. “Understanding the joys and struggles of everyday life, Sarah really taught me the power of empathy,” says this woman from Pune who studied at St Mary’s School and graduated from Wadia College.

Pinto worked in a company before becoming an actress. She has worked freelance as an actress-facilitator for Steps Drama Learning Development – a UK-based behavioral training company.

“We use theater both live and in the media to challenge thinking, create debate, inform and explore in practice, and test ideas in an honest, engaging and enjoyable way,” says Pinto who has also co-founded a grassroots movement “PadSquad”. during the Covid-19 lockdown in June 2020. Padsquad distributed menstrual hygiene products to women in slums, towns and villages across the country, through donations.
