A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

The best place to start is where it all began. Wes Craven’s classic slasher features Freddy Krueger, a disfigured killer with a bladed gauntlet who stalks teenagers in their dreams. The catch is, if Freddy takes you in your dreams, you die in real life.

It’s up to Nancy Thompson and her friends to uncover the dark truth behind the dream killer.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985)

Five years later, a new family has moved into the fateful house on Elm Street. And, as you’d expect, things start to get pretty scary in children’s dreams.

This time, Freddy sets out to possess a teenager in order to wreak havoc in the real world.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

The third part takes place one year after the second part. In this episode, the action takes place in a mental hospital where children’s dreams are visited by our favorite blade demon.

We are introduced to Nancy, from the first film, when she comes to work at the hospital. All too familiar with the unfolding situation, Nancy discovers that one of the children, Kristen Parker, has a gift that could help defeat Freddy once and for all.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Master of Dreams (1988)

The third movie leads us to believe that Freddy has finally been defeated, but Part 4 would be pretty boring if that was the case. Indeed, Freddy is apparently resurrected and attempts to hunt down and kill the surviving children of Elm Street.

New characters are introduced, including Alice Johnson, who could wield the power to finally put Freddy to rest.

It’s up to Alice to save her son and, in turn, prevent Freddy from entering the real world.

Freddy’s Dead: The Last Nightmare (1991)

This title might suggest this is Freddy’s last outing, but fear not, there’s still plenty of brutality to come.

This one takes place a decade later and Freddy has finally killed all the children in his hometown. Now he searches for greener pastures and finds himself tormenting the residents of a home for troubled teenagers.

Wes Craven’s New Nightmare (1994)

This entrant marks a new direction for the franchise and things are getting very meta. The story follows Heather Langenkamp, the actor who played Nancy in the previous films. She has a stalker, and it becomes apparent that he bears striking similarities to her fictional adversary, Freddy Krueger.

Somehow, a demonic force has pushed Freddy into the real world, and Langenkamp must reprise her role as Nancy in order to save the day.

Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

It’s time for the clash of the slasher titans. Many quiet years have passed on Elm Street, and neighborhood children are given dream pills to keep them safe. But, Freddy isn’t done tormenting, so he looks for another option.

Freddy manages to resurrect Jason and sends him to Elm Street to terrify the townspeople, but things don’t go as planned. When Freddy senses that Jason is stealing some of his well-deserved victims, a battle for the ages ensues.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

Finally, we have the 2010 remake. We don’t think it’s essential viewing, but it delves a bit more into Freddy’s origin story than the original. Meanwhile, Jackie Earle Haley, who you might recognize as Watchmen’s Rorschach, puts an extremely creepy spin on the character.
