LIVE BLOG: Hearing for former Huntsville officer charged with murder

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Former Huntsville Police Officer David McCoy’s preliminary hearing began Friday afternoon at the Madison County Courthouse.

McCoy is accused of shooting and killing Courtney Spraggins, 26, at the Weston Ranch apartment complex on January 7. According to Spraggins’ family, she was pregnant with McCoy’s child at the time.

Several motions and filings have already been filed in the case, most recently a change in representation. One of McCoy’s first court-appointed attorneys withdrew from the case after filing a number of demands, one of which sought to bar the public from the courtroom. Many of those claims have since been withdrawn by McCoy’s new attorney.

McCoy, who served as a Marine, was off duty at the time of the shooting. He lived in the apartment complex where the shooting happened and sometimes offered building security.

He allegedly told the dispatcher that Spraggins had died by suicide. He was charged with capital murder the same day.

At a press conference earlier this month, agents from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) and State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) investigating the case reported that the evidence pointed to McCoy, that’s why they were able to charge him so quickly. . At the time, they said they couldn’t share any details.

The prosecution presented their information at today’s hearing and the judge hearing the case ruled the evidence was strong enough to send to a grand jury.
