The trailer for Tom Hanks’ new movie, A Man Called Otto, has been released.

The film is an adaptation of Fredrik Backman’s novel A Man Called Ove, which was previously made into a 2015 Swedish film.

Hanks will play the title character, a “grumpy widower” who is determined in his ways. “When a vibrant young family moves in next door, he meets his soul mate in quick-witted and heavily pregnant Marisol, leading to an unlikely friendship that will turn his world upside down,” the synopsis reads.

Alongside Hanks, The Umbrella Academy actor Cameron Britton, Rachel Keller (Fargo) and Mike Birbiglia (Orange Is the New Black). Marc Forster, best known for Christopher Robin and World War Z, will direct the film, with the screenplay written by David Magee (Lady Chatterley’s Lover).

Hanks was last seen in Disney’s remake of Pinocchio as Geppetto, while he also recently played Colonel Tom Parker in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis.

The movie legend is also set to appear in Wes Anderson’s latest film, Asteroid City, which features a cast of Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody and Margot Robbie.

Speaking of Elvis, Hanks said the musical director’s story was “amazing”.

“The number of ways Parker tricked people with nickels, pennies and dollars is extraordinary, and in my own way, I’ve incorporated some of that into my own life,” he joked.

“Regarding his background, I don’t think anyone knew the colonel’s background. There are extraordinary, tabloidal and melodramatic stories about why and how he left Holland.

“I’d like to think, yeah, he was running from some aspect of his past and escaping his small town, and who among us wouldn’t jump at the chance to do just that?”

A Man Called Otto will be released in theaters on January 6, 2023.
