Every Hulu Original Movie From 2021, Ranked By IMDb

Like almost every other major streaming service, Hulu was behind a handful of original movies in 2021. There were fewer subscribers than in 2020 and these received mixed reviews. Some were ranked among the best films of the year and won Oscars while others were poorly received by critics and audiences.

Besides documentaries or specials, these original feature films span all kinds of genres, from sci-fi to drama to steamy comedies and more. For the most part, 2021 continued Hulu’s underrated trend of producing quality movies, and IMDb users have given ratings to let you know which ones are best to check out.

8 Mother / Android (4.1)

Chloë Grace Moretz and Algee Smith in Mother / Android

The latest version on Hulu is Mother / Android, a sci-fi thriller written and directed by Mattson Tomlin. It’s another in a long line of films set in a post-apocalyptic world. In it, androids that were once used as laborers rose up against humans and took over.

In this heartbreaking new world, a pregnant woman (Chloë Grace Moretz) and her partner (Algee Smith) struggle to get to safety in Boston. While the performance was considered solid, as was Tomlin’s work, some critics felt that there was a lot of generic and somewhat bland aspects here.

seven False positive (4.7)

Ilana Glazer has become one of the most respected people working in Hollywood due to her impressive skills as an actress, producer, writer and everything she tries to do. So, upon hearing that she was co-writing, co-producing and starring in False positive made a lot of people interested in checking it out.

This psychological horror centers on a couple who finally find a fertility doctor who helps them get pregnant, only to find out that something sinister is going on with their doctor. The cast of Glazer, Pierce Brosnan, Justin Theroux and Sophia Bush received high praise although critics did not like the way things ultimately turned out.

6 United States vs. Billie Holiday (6.3)

USA vs. Billie Holiday in the spotlight

As the awards season approaches in early 2021, it seemed like The United States vs. Billie Holiday started making unexpected waves. This is because Andra Day, in her first movie role (her previous role was voice work in Cars 3), won an Oscar nomination as a vacation titular while also winning the Golden Globe for Best Actress.

Based on the book Chasing the Scream: The First and Last Days of the War on Drugs, the film depicts the real-life story of how Holiday, a famous singer, was targeted by the government in its war on drugs. Although the script received some criticism, Day’s performance was more than enough to increase the overall quality.

5 Holiday friends (6.3)

On paper, this might be the simplest of the original movies to release on Hulu, but it’s actually one of the main reasons it works so well. Vacation Friends focuses on Emily (Yvonne Orji) and Marcus (Lil Rel Howery), a couple having a crazy vacation with another couple in Ron (John Cena) and Kyla (Meredith Hagner).

After severing ties after the holidays, Ron and Kyla show up at Emily and Marcus’ wedding, rekindling their sometimes unbalanced antics with the addition of embarrassing consequences from their time spent together months earlier. The film received high praise because even when the script or comedic elements are missing, the hilarious cast chemistry more than makes up for it.

4 The Ultimate Noise Playlist (6.6)

You probably won’t find a sweeter original movie on Hulu than The ultimate noise playlist. The plot centers on Marcus (Keean Johnson), an audio obsessed teenager who has to undergo brain surgery that will cause him to lose his ability to hear. So, he decides to make one last big playlist of all his favorite noises before that happens.

In the midst of this endeavor, he falls in love with Wendy (Madeline Brewer) and they are one of the cutest couples in any movie of 2021. Although some critics felt that it didn’t make anything too new in the kind, it was praised for being sincere and for the electrical chemistry between Johnson and Brewer.

3 Plan B (6.7)

Those who saw Plan B makes almost instant comparisons to things like Netflix I have never and 2017 Booksmart. While these are appropriate, it also looked a lot like 2020 Not pregnant. Plan B sees Sunny (Kuhoo Verma) losing her virginity and needing the morning after pill, but the closest place to get one without her parents’ knowledge means a road trip is in the works.

Sunny travels with her lazy best friend Lupe (Victoria Moroles) and the two have quite a fling en route to Planned Parenthood. Plan B was widely acclaimed for delivering a timely post, featuring talented young actors with a precise script. Natalie Morales also did a phenomenal job in their directorial debut.

2 Boss Level (6.8)

Frank Grillo takes a big shot in Boss Level

One of the many films that have experienced various delays, Boss level finally arrived on Hulu in March 2021. The sci-fi action flick admittedly doesn’t have the most original premise. He sees a retired Special Forces agent (Frank Grillo) trapped in a time loop that ends with his murder, so he must solve the mystery of how it all happens.

The genre of time-looped movies with similar setups is often seen on Netflix ARQ at Happy day of the dead Hulu’s own Palm springs. However, this one was rated as a hit that stood out in a crowded area because it is deliciously over the top. Grillo is joined by Naomi Watts, Ken Jeong, Michelle Yeoh and Annabelle Wallis.

1 Nomadic country (7.4)

Frances McDormand and David Strathairn in Nomadland

Technically, Nomadic country is a 2020 film since it premiered at the Venice Film Festival that year. However, it didn’t officially hit theaters until 2021, and was released widely on Hulu about a month later. Co-distributed with Searchlight Pictures, the film is based on the book by Jessica Bruder Nomadland: Surviving America in the 21st Century.

The film tells the story of a widow (Frances McDormand) who loses everything during the Great Recession and begins to live as a nomad in her van, finding a community among other nomads. McDormand won Best Actress at the Oscars, while Chloe Zhao made history by winning Best Director, and the film also won Best Picture.
