15 TV and Movie Characters Who Deserved Better

If you need me, I will shake, cry and vomit at the thought of all the tyrannies thrown at our best friends on screen.

Trigger Warning: This message contains mentions of suicide.

1.

Sweetu (Delnaaz Irani) from Kal Ho Naa Ho

Dharma Productions

In a parallel universe, Naina (Preity Zinta) was Sweetu’s villain origin story. But in our universe, she happens to be Sweetu’s best friend. She shamed Sweetu at every opportunity, blamed her for wanting to find love, and vehemently believed that no one will ever love Sweetu unless she loses weight. Who needs a bully if you have a best friend like Naina? But Naina was too normalized to kill Sweetu’s vibes. No matter how hard she tried to make her feel like trash, Sweetu always felt like money.

2.

Anand (Rajesh Khanna) from Anand

Shemaroo Video Pvt. ltd.

A field full of sunflowers. A dark room, full of glowworms. The coveted forehead kisses high. The calm following a good cry. I swear it wasn’t a failed attempt to write poetry. I was just trying to choose the closest possible analogies to describe Anand’s personality. How dare he lose his life to cancer when he could have been frolicking in the sun and eating berries instead? As long as he lived he taught all his friends”to love and be loved”. His photos should have been sent to NASA because he was the brightest star in the history of our galaxy. He deserved the world.

3.

Lane Kim (Keiko Agena) Gilmore Girls

When Olivia Rodrigo said, “Where’s my fucking teenage dream?” », she was talking about Lane’s teenage dreams of becoming a rockstar, which never really came to fruition. Despite being a HAG (hot attractive girl), her love interests were pretty much personified. Unlike Rory (Alexis Bledel), the opportunities didn’t fall into her lap, nor did she have a friendly mother. While she should have been in her time of murder, the writers of the series imposed motherhood on her. Her potential had been nipped in the bud, not to mention her right to enjoy freedom – sexual or otherwise.

4.

Tina (Kareena Kapoor Khan) from Mujhse Dosti Karoge!

Yash Raj Films / bypriyashah on GIPHY / Via giphy.com

Pooja (Rani Mukerji) and Raj (Hrithik Roshan) were in love with each other, but they kept Tina in the dark about it. Despite all her flaws, Tina deserved a lover with a moral backbone stronger than a chocolate éclair. And she well deserved a friend who would not have made her an object of pity, just to appease her complex of martyrdom. Both Pooja and Raj chained Tina and hid the truth from her. Seriously, can we set their pants on fire already?

5.

Boo (Jenny Rainsford) Flea bag

Pictures of two brothers

To scream or not to scream is never the question because how can you even think of choosing the latter when people like Boo die by accidental suicide? Boo used to think that peace is always an option, even when kids stick crayons in hamsters’ nether regions. From her personality and the way she perceived the world, it’s pretty clear that she believed, “if equal affection cannot be / may the most loving be me.“She didn’t just support human rights, but also human wrongs and that’s what made her the most compassionate of them all.

6.

Camille (Camille Razat) from Emily in Paris

Life is quite a beach because, time and time again, you are forced to eat sand. In Camille’s case, the sand was the deception of her friend Emily (Lily Collins). Of the eight billion people who currently inhabit our planet, Emily could have slept with, she chose Camille’s ex. Camille was always generous and always kind to Emily – from flower shopping to art gallery invitations, Camille always showed up for her.

TL; DR: Camille helped Emily settle in an otherwise unknown Paris. To avenge Camille, Emily’s redemption arc is not enough. She deserves to be haunted by a sinister crow until the cows come home.

seven.

Nisha (Karisma Kapoor) and Ajay (Akshay Kumar) from Dil to Pagal Hai

Yash Raj Movies

Think twice? Daring of us to assume that Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) and Pooja (Madhuri Dixit) even thought once before mistreating their best friends, Nisha and Ajay, respectively. While not having romantic feelings for their best friends was completely normal, driving them around and later rejecting them at their convenience was by no means acceptable. Nisha and Ajay weren’t perfect, but they certainly didn’t deserve to be thrown away like used plastic straws.

8.

Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer) from Lucas

For our friendly neighborhood sea monster, Luca (Jacob Tremblay), Alberto’s company was the ultimate paradise. He encouraged Luca to step out of his comfort zone, supported him through rain or shine (both literally and metaphorically), and sold their Vespa just so Luca could go to school. How can we ask for a sequel where Alberto isn’t reduced to a mere plot device enabling Luca’s story arc?

9.

Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) from Sholay

United Producers

He protects (those he loved);

He attac (the dacoits);

But above all, he had his best friend, Veeru (Dharmendra), back.

In the cinematic universe, meeting two good-hearted best friends is rare, as one of them always has to face an untimely death. What is mortality and why is it so cruel?

ten.

Veronica (Deepika Padukone) from Cocktail

Eros International / Via giphy.com

Giving girls will protect their girlfriends from their shitty husbands, help them find their place, provide them with a home, and do whatever they can to win the approval of the mother of the boy they’re in love with. It’s Veronica, Veronica is generous girls. She was, however, stereotyped as the “wild party girl” who didn’t deserve genuine affection. For all the Veronicas out there, please know, “We deserve a sweet epilogue, my love. We’re good people and we’ve suffered enough.”

11.

Leslie (AnnaSophia Robb) Bridge to Terabithia

Entertainment at the top

Leslie turned Jess (Josh Hutcherson) on, was her partner in discovering new worlds, and was also instrumental in turning her bully into her friend. If she had been Transformer, she would be Optimus Fine. But his presence was a privilege that very few were allowed to enjoy. Therefore, she was taken from our world too soon. Whatever universe she inhabits right now, I hope she says, “I rest in the grace of the world and I am free.”

12.

Ishaan (Sushant Singh Rajput) from Kai Po Che!

UTV Movies

Gorgeous gorgeous boys – like Ishaan, are extremely passionate about sports, dream of owning a sports store and a sports academy with their best friends, and take the ball to save others’ lives. Can anyone explain why communal riots are a thing, even in the 21st century, and when will we stop butchering each other over some nonsense or another?

13.

marley from marley and me

20th century fox

I wake up and it breaks my heartand why wouldn’t he be, considering how Marley was allowed to grow old and eventually die. He was full of mischief and a joyful sight to behold. John’s (Owen Wilson) column and therefore his source of income depended on Marley’s antics. Despite his occasional annoyance, John’s wife, Jenny (Jennifer Aniston), eventually had to agree that Marley was the cheese on their pizza. This list would have been incomplete if I hadn’t included dogs because where would humanity be without our furry four-legged companions?!

14.

Enzo from The art of racing in the rain

Fox 2000 Pictures

Hoard some tissues, because another sad doggo story is brewing. Enzo put the golden retriever. Considering he was still by Denny’s (Milo Ventimiglia) side and even tore up the legal document in which he relinquished custody of his daughter, it’s safe to conclude that Enzo was the friend, the philosopher and Denny’s guide. For hijacking Enzo and taking him across the Rainbow Bridge, the Grim Reaper must be banished to the Shadow Realm.

15.

Swifty (Shaun Thomas) The selfish giant

IFC Films

Swifty was just a young boy, standing in front of the big bad world, trying to make a living selling scrap metal with his best friend. When someone like him dies of electrocution, “It’s so hard to see tomorrow past tonight”. Instead of waging wars and colonizing the moon, can we collectively use our good brain cells and manifest a reality where our young people don’t have to risk their lives every day to make ends meet?
